    ion and a concentration in  Race, Gender, Ethnicity, and Public Policy.=
     Her undergraduate research and activism led to the formation of the Fo=
    undation for Self-Reliance.<p> During 2006 - 2008, Melanie mentored a t=
    eam of SF Bay Area Afghan American youth who eventually became the new =
    leaders of FSR in June 2008. <p> As an FSR advisor and co-managing dire=
    ctor, she continues in her role as an FSR mentor. <p> Her present-day d=
    octoral work as an Afghan Diaspora/American Immigration scholar at UC B=
    erkeley, will continue to help shape and reshape FSR's many projects an=
