New Directions and New Focus!
January 2010

FSR is in the process of transforming its former broad-based aid and education programs into more narrowly defined transnational research and education initiatives in the U.S. and Afghanistan.

A volunteer team of emerging young Afghan American leaders are spearheading these research and education initiatives as they develop new collaborations with academics, community leaders, and policy makers from a wide-range of disciplines and efforts.

In collaboration with the UC Berkeley Center for South Asia Studies, the UC Berkeley Center for Middle Eastern Studies, other learning and research centers, and other community-based nonprofit organizations, the FSR team is organizing a May 2010 workshop at the UC Berkeley campus--more details are forthcoming

Our website will soon reflect the changes we've made to our programs and services, and your patience is appreciated as we work on our updates!

The Foundation for Self-Reliance is a non-profit public benefit 501(c) (3) California corporation; Employer Identification Number (EIN): 20-1950359. All donations are 100% tax deductible under U.S. law.

About our Charity

Founded: 2005
(FSR), founded in January 2005, develops, implements, and manages community-based programs and services that promote economic independence and self-empowerment for Afghan refugees in the San Francisco Bay Area, and war widows in Afghanistan.

As a secular, apolitical 501 (c) (3) nonprofit public benefit California corporation, we are committed to developing social practice, social change, and social justice through capacity building, outreach, research, and education.

FSR is unique. We are a volunteer-based organization, and have a staff of over forty volunteers that run our programs in the U.S. and Afghanistan.

Nearly all day-to-day expenses are subsidized by local SF Bay Area donors. This includes office rent, utilities, telephone, office supplies, postage, website hosting, insurance, professional services, computer equipment, telephone and fax equipment, office furniture, and vehicles.

We employ the Internet extensively. This allows us to keep our overhead costs extremely low. Our programs, in both the U.S. and Afghanistan, are being managed though virtual business processes.
